Game of Thrones Summary

A Game of Thrones, the first installment in the George R.R. Martin’s eventually seven installment fantasy book series entitled “A Song Of Fire and Ice”. A Game of Thrones, like the following book in the series, illustrates the unfolding epic fantasy story which takes place on the continent of Westeros. While the story is written within a fictional world, the written utilizes many real concepts such as betrayal, politics, secret affairs, the fall of a once great family from the heights of nobility, violence and many other authentic elements of real life to capture the reader’s mind. To accompany this the author uses a unique multi-perspective third-person narrator storytelling style, where it is unknown if the narrator is, in fact, a character existing within the story’s timeline or an omniscient and omnipresent entity which exists outside the bounds of the tale.

Regardless of which, within this style the fantasy develops through the perspective of each of its respective main characters, allowing for the tale to not only develop but also be seen from each their respective points of view.

One such character is the protagonist Eddard Stark, the King of the north, the head of House Stark and also a friend to King Robert Baratheon. Through a series of mysterious events, Eddard has the title of Hand of the King thrust upon the death of the previous Hand, Jon Arryn. The title can be interpreted in the same way as one would interpret having a right-hand man and this position also brings with it a large amount of influence within the realm. Like anyone new to a powerful position Eddard must learn the “ins and outs” of the position, which comes along with it the important aspect of knowing who to and who not to trust. This becomes evident when Eddard Stark travels to King’s Landing and is confronted with the tasks of politics, continually present conspiracy and also privileged information which comes along with being the Hand of the King. Eddard must decide if to trust the council of his wife’s old friend and politician Petyr Baelish, the potential wisdom of Maester Pycelle or possible lies from the shady master of secrets Varys. This decision along with him catching wind of the potential illegitimacy of his friend King Robert’s and his queen Cersei Lannister’s children, weigh heavy upon his mind as the new Hand tries to find his way.

Meanwhile, activity begins to develop on a continent to the east of Westeros with the last remaining members the family that reigned over Westeros before the Baratheon’s the Targaryen family. Due to the sins of their family the children of the Mad King, Viserys and Daenerys have been exiled to this area and are getting by solely upon the kindness of those around them. Not content with his new position in life Viserys comes up with a plan for his family to regain their long-lost throne, where he essentially marries his sister Daenerys to the Dothraki a barbarian tribe and their powerful leader Khal Drogo. As a wedding gift to Daenerys she receives many gifts among them she receives of all things three fossilized dragon eggs, which in these times, can these eggs be used to buy Viserys way to the throne or maybe they may serve another purpose.

As it’s already known in the times of Kings and Queens and illegitimate children to a marriage were treated as outsiders to a family and this was the case for Eddard Stark’s illegitimate son Jon Snow. While loved by the father but less than favored by his new mother Catelyn Stark, Eddards Stark’s leaving, forces Jon Snow to leave his former home and join the Night’s watch. A formerly well-regarded organization but due to their enrollment of criminals and exiles have lost their former stature. Jon is not without family here, however, Jon has relative which also works for the Night’s Watch his Uncle Benjen stark, who unfortunately goes missing during his travels to the north. Later on, Jon encounters and combats zombie-like creatures where he manages to kill to one of them. A Game of Thrones shows how all these the events come together to unveil the future of Westeros and thus sowing the seeds for the epic fantasy adventure of the “A Song of Fire and Ice”.
