"A Modest Proposal" is a satirical essay written by Jonathan Swift and published in 1729. The essay proposes a shocking solution to the problem of poverty in Ireland: that poor Irish families should sell their children as food to wealthy English landlords. The essay is a commentary on the dehumanizing effects of poverty and the cruel indifference of the ruling class.
