A Walk in the Woods Summary
A Walk in the Woods is about Bill Bryson journey through the Appalachian Trail, which is from Georgia to Maine. Another excellent trail is the Pacific Crest Trail, which Cheryl Strayed wrote about in her book Wild check out the link for more on that.
Bill decides to hike the trail with his friend Stephen Katz. The two soon encounter many difficulties associated with the weight of the equipment and food packed. Stephen physical shape was also a hindrance since he was not only overweight but a recovering alcoholic. The two are forced to dump some of their load to make the hike less strenuous.
After hiking for quite some time the two realize how little the distance covered was in proportion to the length of the trail and decide to skip the section (the trail has many famous sections). The two press on this new section of the trail for 800 miles south of Roanoke, Virginia before finally calling it quits and heading their separate ways.
Following the previous venture, Bryson attempts other sections of the trail some with and without his friend Katz. He treks through Centralia, Pennsylvania and the Hundred Mile Wilderness, which again, the two fail to complete.
Actually, most of the attempted hikes ended in the two taking an early leave. Which is still a great accomplishment since when starting his hiking journey Bryson was already in his 40’s.
The Appalachian Trail covers some of the most breathtaking scenes in America: Mountains, Lakes, Forest. It is a must visit place to go for a hike especially armed with this Bill Bryson guide, where he treats us to the history and ecology of the trail. He also shares with us his adventure; including the folks he met and bears, remember the Bears (after reading the novel you will understand why). A Walk in the Woods will make the laziest of individuals want to put on some boots and trek through the Woods or at least find yourself a good seat to read the book.
