The story of All the Bright places centers around the passionate love story of Theodore Finch and Violet Markey. The story has a familiar cast of character troupes such as; the popular cheerleader and the highschool outcast. Despite this, the story shines in its own right. It vividly portrays a romance that seamlessly swings between the beauty of teenage love and the turbulence of depression.
Theodore and Violet, both teenagers who grew up in a little town in the state of Indiana, and attend the same school. However, they live very different social circles. Theodore is a young man who is abused and bullied by both his classmates and parents. He also has an obsession with death, which gives him the nickname of high school freak. Although they come from such different worlds, the two teenagers found themselves standing on the school bell tower together. Finch is surprised when he realizes that Violet is also there. Violet is one of the most popular girls in the school. However, Violet feels guilty for surviving a car accident that claimed the life of her sister, Eleanor. The accident happened 9 months before this moment and, Violet blames herself for the accident as she gave directions. After the accident, Violet was devastated. She left the student council and the cheerleading squad and often thinks that it should have been her who died instead of Eleanor.
Still centimeters from death, Violet and Finch begin to share what could be their last words. However, Finch cleverly manages to convince Violet to get down from the ledge and, Violet does the same for Finch.
For Finch, thoughts of suicide are as frequent for him as blinking. Finch is treated as an outcast by his family as well. They have no patience or empathy for the mental illness and challenges that Finch face. Finch’s obsession with suicide is to the extent that he even makes notes about the suicides done by others.
Finch’s and Violet’s relationship take a step forward during a geography class adventure. The teacher instructs the students to pair up as the class explores the sights in Indiana. Finch, as we would expect, takes the opportunity to partner with Violet. The purpose of the adventure is for the students to become familiar with the unique sights of Indiana. However, the two teens are more focused on each other than the hills of Indiana. This building romance eventually erupts into a very loving relationship. Finch serves as a catalyst for Violet’s healing process. She takes her first seat inside a car after the accident and also starts back up her hobby of writing. But most impactfully, Finch helped Violet to confront and talk about her sister’s death, something even her parents haven’t done. Unfortunately, Finch is not as gifted at healing himself. Finch unknowingly lives with bipolar disorder, and this causes him to sway between very drastic emotional states. To give a visual Finch, can be Superman ay 9am and be Clark Kent with kryptonite in his pocket at 1 pm. The ever-growing relationship he has with Violet acts as a bright light in the dark world of his mind.
Although he can hide his pain from Violet, the state of his depression continues to worsen and spikes after his expulsion from school. Finch eventually reaches the point where he decides to end his life. He tries to overdose on sleeping pills but quickly realizes that this is not what he wants. Finch is taken to a hospital to have his stomach cleared of the sleeping pills. Finch decides to make a change in his life, and he reaches out to a suicide support group close by. There Finch meets a former mean girl Amanda whos grows concerned about Finch and explains the situation to Violet. Violet becomes deeply worried and seeks to speak with Finch, but it only ends in a huge argument. Finch to escape his life runs away from home, and Violet searches for him. Finch sends Violet very cryptic text messages that break her when she realizes their meaning.
