Following the narrative of a German orphan boy, Werner and a blind French girl, Marie-Laure – Anthony creates a beautiful, informative story as their paths collide trying to survive the pangs of World War II. Doerr’s unique use of the English language creates a tastefully realistic physical environment with extreme detail complete with the help of beautiful metaphors (San Francisco Chronicle).
According to (LA Times) All the Light, We Cannot See, is a magnificent, deeply moving novel from a writer “whose sentences never fail to thrill”.
To see Anthony Doerr touching inspiration for this book sees his video below:
Marie-Laure and her father live in Paris, near the Museum of Natural History where he also works. Unfortunately, Marie goes blind at an early age. Her father made a replica of the town so she may navigate through it by touch. When she reaches age 12, the Nazis occupied Paris, and both she and her father were forced to flee. They resided with an Uncle in Saint-Malo.
Werner grew up with his sister and is an expert in building and fixing important instruments such as radios. This skill got him a place in Hitler’s brutal academy for Hitler Youth. He is soon given individual assignments to track the resistance. Werner becomes quite aware of how his ‘talents’ are costing the lives of many other human beings. Eventually, he ends up in Saint-Malo where Marie is located, and then their stories converge.
