Always and Forever Lara Jean Plot
There’s a familiar saying which goes nothing lasts forever. Just as fall eventually transitions to winter, we as people transition through different stages of our lives. Transitioning is also what Lara Jean is going through as she begins her senior in high school. Soon her life as a university student will commence. Facing her life’s next hurdle, Lara Jean is looking around at various universities to attend. Her eyes are set on UVA, an acronym for the University of Virginia though she has applied to other universities. Why UVA? The love of her life Peter Kavinsky has received a lacrosse scholarship for the school. Also, to feel close to her late mother, who also attended UVA. Planning for their future together, Lara Jean joins Peter on a visit to UVA’s campus, similar to a couple picking out their future home.
Even though Lara Jean is looking forward to the future, the present must come first. The high school prom is swiftly approaching, and many students are receiving and making proposals. Lara begins to wonder if Peter will ask her even though he’s never been the overly romantic type. Peter answers Lara Jean’s question during her classes’ trip to New York. While taking photos together at the Empire State building, Peter leaves his school bag on the ground. Peter’s school bag attracts the attention of a security guard who insists on searching the bag to check for any dangerous item. However, there is something dangerous revealed when the security guard opened the bag. To his surprise, a dangerously cute teddy bear is there, along with a prerecorded voice message of Peter inviting Lara Jean to the Prom. Peter’s gesture moves Lara Jean’s heart. On the verge of tears from his reenactment of one of her favorite movie scenes, Lara Jean happily says yes.
When Lara Jean returns home after the class’ weekend trip, Lara Jean has trouble sleeping, her mind filled with worry about getting into UVA. Unfortunately, her wait ended with heartbreak as UVA rejected Lara Jean’s application. Peter, her father and, her other family members try to console her, but the wholes in her heart need time to heal.
However, an idea strikes Lara Jean that allows her to keep her dream alive. She plans to attend W&M, an acronym for William & Mary, for a year before transferring to UVA. Lara Jean believes it will be easier to get into UVA as a transfer student, and she prepares herself to carry out this option. Lara Jean’s father’s upcoming wedding helps to distract from her heartbreak as well. He finally proposed to Trina, his girlfriend of 8 years and, Lara Jean’s mind is bursting with wedding ideas.
Soon Lara Jean notices Mr.Kavinsky, Peter’s father attending one of his lacrosse games. Mr. Kavinsky realizes Lara Jeans saw him and asks her to keep it a secret. Peter and his father had a broken relationship for a while, and Mr.Kavinsky wants to repair it, though Peter is uninterested. However, Lara Jean believes that Peter will regret not mending ties with his father and encourages him to consider inviting his father to graduation. The day of the Prom is here. Peter and Lara Jean enjoy a beautiful Prom night, which ends with Lara Jean blowing out her birthday candles.
Later in the school year, Laura Jean learns that she has been accepted into UNC. The thought of going to the school excites her so much that Lara Jean and her friend Chris take an impromptu road trip to UNC to see the campus. After the trip, Lara Jean falls for UNC and changes her university trajectory from going to W&M for one year. Instead, she plans to attend UNC for all four of her university years. Lara Jean enthusiastically tells Peter about her new plans but Peter is left dejected as the drive from UVA to UNC is inconvenient for multiple reasons
On the day of Graduation Peter’s father is a no show, but that wasn’t the only surprise of Peter’s night. Lara Jean gives Peter a scrapbook filled with all their times together.
Later in the novel, Peter’s mom informs Lara Jean that Peter is thinking about transferring to UNC after spending a year at UVA. Peter’s mom is concerned that Lara Jean has become mainly a distraction and obsession for Peter. Peter’s mom later tells Lara Jean that she needs to let Peter go so that he can make his own life decisions.
Lara Jean gets drunk at Trina’s bachelorette party, from drinking to avoid thinking about breaking up with Peter. Later, when Peter arrives, Lara Jean tells him that it would be best they break up so he can concentrate on his future. Peter says he expected this, as he took the scrapbook as her farewell and something to remember her by. Peter leaves on that note.
