Bridgerton Intro
On December 25th, 2020, Netflix premiered a worldwide hit American drama series known as Bridgerton. Bridgerton’s first season consists of eight episodes that are roughly around an hour in length. The talented Chris Van Dusen is the creator of the show. He also worked alongside Shonda Rhimes as executive producer of the show. The production company responsible for putting together the excellent cast and beautiful garments of the show is Shonda’s company known as Shondaland. Even if you only have seen the poster of the series, it is evident how tasteful the production choices were in the making of the series.
Bridgerton’s first season is an adaptation mainly based upon the first book in Julia Quinn’s Brigerton book series title The Duke and I. As one would expect, the series shares a similar setting as the book series. Bridgerton is set in Regency-era London 1813 and follows the lives of the Bridgerton family. The matriarch of the Bridgerton household is Dowager Viscountess Violet Bridgerton, who is the mother of eight children. Violet has four sons Colin, Anthony, Gregory, and Benedict. Also, four daughters, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, and Hyacinth. However, one of the differences between the t.v and book series stems from a brilliant creative decision made by Chris Van Dunsen. Chris Van Dunsen researched the lineage of Queen Charlotte and discovered her to have African ancestry. Chris chose to create a storyline that showcases racial integration among the ton of Regency-era London.
To give an idea of the storyline of the t.v series, I will now share a short overview of the first initial plot to whet your appetite. Queen Charlotte(played by Golda Rosheuvel) arranges for the oldest daughter of the Bridgerton family, Daphne Bridgerton(played by Phoebe Dynevor), to marry Simon Bassett(played by Regé-Jean Page). Simon is not only the best friend of Daphne’s brother Anothony but also the Duke of Hastings. Despite the prompts Simon receives from others, he is determined to remain a bachelor. Simon then meets with Daphne to scheme a plan that allows him to keep his glorious position as a bachelor while allowing Daphne to find a loving husband.
If you have already watched the show and consider yourself a fan, I have good news for you. January 2021, Brirdgerton was renewed to have a second season. On top of this, Chris Van Dusen announced during April 2021 that Netflix renewed Bridgerton for a third and fourth season. Production of the second season begins in the spring of 2021. If that was not enough, Netflix announced that Bridgerton has a spinoff series centering around the origin of Queen Charolette in the works.
The Duke and I Plot
When the book begins, we meet Daphne Bridgeton, the eldest daughter of the Bridgerton family. It is the time of Regency London, where the parents among the ton or upper class of London raise their children to behave as a proper young lady or gent should. As one would expect, the young ladies often display high etiquette and are a pleasure to be around. These beautiful feminine qualities tend to make the young woman of the ton a catch for any young duke that approaches them. However, Daphne does not want to conform to the status quo. She is an attractive young woman who has received and rejected marriage proposals from men she quite simply does not want to marry. Daphne even punched Nigel Berbrooke(a senior suitor) in the jaw after he refused to accept her rejection.
Despite Daphne’s forthright attitude, her mother, Violet Bridgerton, remains determined to find her a husband. It was during the altercation with Nigel that Daphne meets Simon Bassett. Simon is a popular Duke among the females of the ton who has many suitors of his own. Shortly after speaking with Daphne, Simon realizes that she is the sister of his best friend Anthony Bridgerton and proceeds to interact with her more cautiously.
Due to the painful scars from his past, Simon has formed a firm resolve never to marry. Ultimately, he wants the lineage of his family name to come to an end. Daphne and Simon realize that they share similar views on marriage and the norms of high-class society. The duo then proceeds to concoct a plan that will help them both. They decide to engage in a false courtship. This charade seems to be the answer to all of their troubles. But will Daphne do after he feels for Simon become true?
