During the trying times after World War Two, we meet the character Ellis Lacey from Ireland. She is given an opportunity by a priest in Brooklyn, who offered to sponsor her in the US. She grabs this opportunity even though she thought her older sister should go instead – but she already has a stable job in Ireland. Eventually, Ellis travels to Brooklyn leaving her mother and sister behind.
In Brooklyn, she is slowly getting her life together. Her first job is on Fulton Street, at a department store. She then meets Tony, an Italian living in Brooklyn. He gradually wins her over, just as she falls in love tragedy struck back home. Ellis has to choose between her Brooklyn life and new found love and returning home.
