The new hit series on Netflix, Lupin, is arguably the biggest non-English Netflix original title ever. As most of you are probably aware, Lupin is a French mystery thriller with an outstanding lead actor, Omar Sy, who plays professional thief Assane Diop. Even though George Kay and François Uzan’s creation premiered on January 8th,2021, it has already been streamed on over 70 million NetFlix accounts. Simply Outstanding. Though George and François deserve so much praise for Lupin’s success, the show draws inspiration from Arsène Lupin, Gentleman-Thief by Maurice Leblanc. Maurice’s work also inspired memorable titles such as Ocean eleven.
Plot
Arsène Lupin, Gentleman Burglar, is not a novel, but instead the first collection of short stories of the brilliant character created by Maurice Leblanc. Arsène Lupin is a genius and charismatic thief whose talents earned him the alias, the Sherlock Holmes of crime. The similarity in the characters leads to the story of Arsène Lupin versus Herlock Sholmes. Due to copyright, Sherlock changed to Herlock. Regardless, the tale offers readers a fantastic battle of genius between these legendary fictional characters.
Arsène Lupin also holds similarities to the character Robin Hood. Though he might not have a band of merry men, Lupin believes in taking from the rich and giving to the poor. The French investigator who tries his best to stop Lupin is also a victim of his criminal prowess.
Returning focus the first collection. The collection’s release date was June 7th, 1907, and contained eight adventures. These adventures had the titles: The Arrest of Arsène Lupin, Arsène Lupin in Prison, The Escape of Arsène Lupin, The Mysterious Traveller, The Queen’s Necklace, The Safe of Madame Imbert, Sherlock Holmes Arrives Too Late, The Black Pearl, and Seven of Hearts. To give a feel for the stories, the following are two summaries of tales from the collection.
The Arrest of Arsène Lupin
The infamous Arsène Lupin travels to America by stowing away aboard a ship. When the ship’s guests learn that Lupin is aboard, Bernard d’Andrèzy leads the search for the thief. Unfortunately for the guests, they have only tidbits of information to go on. Vague descriptions of someone’s appearance will only help so much. Unfazed by the commotion on the ship, Lupin pilfers a woman’s jewels. Unknown to Lupin expert inspector Ganimard is at the ships’ dock awaiting his arrival. He later successfully arrests Lupin, masquerading as Bernard, while keeping the stolen jewels hidden in his camera.
Arsène Lupin in Prison
Arsène Lupin, while imprisoned in La Santé Prison, sends a letter to Baron Nathan Cahorn. The master thief demands the Baron to send him several of his valuables. If the Baron refuses, Lupin will come on September 27th to steal to take them and more. The Baron acquires the aide of detective Ganimard and two of his men to guard his valuables on the announced date. Despite the guard’s presence, the Baron’s valuables are gone. Ganimard asks Cahorn not to tell people he was there and begins a secret investigation. Ganimard is labeled as the thief attempts to clear his name by going to see Lupin in prison. There the detective learned he hired Lupin as one of the guards. Lupin also declares that his arrest was due to distraction from Miss Netty and that he will not be present at his trial.
