Jacob Portman, a 16-year-old boy, sets out to investigate is grandfathers murder which was caused by an apparent imaginary creature. He departs to Wales to further his quest. He soon uncovered that his grandfather lived in an old orphanage or Home for “Peculiar Children.” Here he meets Emma, a beautiful girl who has the power to manipulate fire (a peculiar child). She takes Jacob back in time to meet Miss Peregrine, the orphanage director.
She lives with the other orphans in a time loop. Jacob meets many other peculiar children, including Milliard, who has the power of invisibility and Bronwyn, who has superior strength. During his stay, Jacob is told of stories of mysterious deaths in the area, which he then alerted the Peculiar children. Apparently, these deaths are caused by “hollowgasts” or “hollows”, the same thing that killed Jacob’s grandfather.
He soon realizes he is the only person that can see the monsters, and inherently only he can stop their killing. He succeeds in killing one of the Hollows, but Miss Peregrine is kidnaped; though the children managed to rescue her. They must now find another time loop because theirs is taken over by Hollows. Also, Miss Peregrine is stuck in bird form and is unable to revert to her original form.
