Noggin Intro

Noggin by John Corey Whaley is a 2014 young adult science fiction novel that combines romance, the future, and breathtaking surgery. The book is centered on the sudden reanimation of a dead sixteen-year-old teenager, Travis Coates.

Travis grows up in Kansas City, Missouri, with his family and close friends nearby. Growing up, he falls in love with Cate, a beautiful teenager who also resides in Missouri, and together they tour the city. Travis’s favorite place is the Triton theatre, where he often takes Cate for movie dates. The Triton theatre holds memories that are recalled, even after they are no longer together.

One day, Travis declares his profound love for Cate, and in return, Cate creates a painting as a show of love for him. Everything is going fine until Travis discovers that he has leukemia.

From the look of things, he will certainly die. He seeks help, and fortunately, he finds the solution he is looking for in Denver, Colorado. He then decides to cryogenically freeze his head before he dies. Something like a head transplant. The reason behind this action is his hope for a technology that will allow his head to join back to a different body, so he could come back to life again.

Travis’s hope for a better medical technology that will make him live again with his head joined to a donor body eventually works out. Sooner than expected, Travis finds himself in a hospital, alive and with just five years behind every other person.

Travis comes back to life with his head and a different body after five years. This time around, he has to adapt to the body upgrade from the heavily built body of his donor, who died of a brain tumor.
However, during his stay in the hospital, neither his best friend nor his girlfriend comes to visit him. And when he is finally discharged, getting settled at home is challenging because it does not feel like home anymore. His room is now in a different shape from when he left. Also, he has to deal with making a constant appearance on the news as his successful head transplant is among those that had worked.

Travis feels weird, not just in his newly acquired body but also in his environment. Now, he’s 21 years, as against the 16-year old boy he was before his death. That does not change anything, as he is still young at heart and will prefer to be at the kid’s table rather than eat with the adults in the family.

The most shocking part is that Travis lost his girlfriend to another guy and with whom she is engaged. In addition, his best friend that confessed he was gay at his sickbed already has a girlfriend.
Noggin by John Corey Whaley exposes Travis’s restlessness and emotional problems that accompany having a new body, losing friends, and coming back to life after five years.
