Percy Jackson and The Last Olympian Plot
It’s finally here. Percy’s 16th birthday, the battle with the titans, the great Prophecy. With the news of a suspected spy, tension at camp is at an all-time high. With the Olympians, each preoccupied with fortifying their domains, the responsibility of protecting seems to fall in the hands of the young half-bloods. Sacrifices will be made, risks will be taken, and the prophecy will be fulfilled. The only question is, who will emerge victoriously.
From the very beginning, things start to develop quickly and this pace doesn’t slow throughout the book. In terms of plot, the last Olympian does an incredible job of wrapping up this series without leaving any loose ends or questions to be asked, although it also alludes to a potential story, leaving the reader on his/her toes.
Backstories are finally revealed bringing a new way of looking at the main conflicts of the books. Unlike with other series, the development of each of these complex characters seems appropriate and satisfying. Each character grows into the role he/she was meant to play, whether the said role was expected throughout the series or not. One especially nice aspect of this sequel was the fact that you get to revisit old creatures and monsters, from the infamous Mrs. Dodds to the more likable Blackjack. This book does a great job at integrating and giving new life to the old Greek myths. From Achilles and Patroclus to Hercules, any fan of the classic stories will certainly be satisfied with the way their stories were tied to our favorite characters in this series. From the banter between our favorite characters, to the fabulously entertaining fight scenes, the humor by which Percy narrates this story has certainly and thankfully not changed. Rick Riordan manages to bring light to the darkest of times and conveys meaningful messages of family, friendship, and righting the wrongs of those before you. Relationships develop, and preconceived notions are changed as the characters go through the greatest battle of their lives.
