Ruin and Rising Plot

Ruin and Rising is the last installment in Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha trilogy. This book picks up where the previous one, Siege and Storm, left off, where our hero Alina Starkov is hiding underground.

After another dramatic clash between Alina and The Darkling, the sun summoner is now frail and needs to recover. Alina takes refuge in an underground network of tunnels built centuries ago. Above ground, The Darkling is at the peak of his strength. The Darkling now ruthlessly reigns over the kingdom of Ravka from his throne of darkness. Alina is aware of the chaos occurring on the surface and desperately wants to leave the tunnels to lead the resistance against The Darkling. However, in her frail condition, Alina can not defy the wishes of the zealots who want her to remain underground until she fully recovers. The zealots view Alina as a holy entity and the world’s only hope against The Darkling. Showcasing, why the zealots remain steadfast in their determination to keep Alina safe. Alina is in such a weakened state that she is unable to summon any sunlight in the tunnels. Alina soon learns another amplifier is out there, one with enough power to help her defeat The Darkling. The sparse Firebird that no one has a clue on its last location. Even though both finding and slaying the mythical beast seems an impossible feat. Alina stokes the fire in her heart to take on the challenge. However, before she can save the world, our hero must first escape the protection of the zealots.

Malyen “Mal” Oretsev locates Alina in the tunnels and swiftly comes to her rescue. After catching their breath on the surface, Alina and Mal rendevous with a group of allies to organize a plan.

The battle strategy was as follows. Due to her state, Alina would remain in hiding while a section of allies hunts for the Firebird. Mal would begin to search for Prince Nikolai. Nikolai is a powerful Grisha believed to have the power to control the air itself. Nikolai’s and Alina’s abilities in combination would be potent enough to overpower The Darkling if no one locates the Firebird. Unfortunately, amid executing their plan, The Darkling’s forces attack. The army of darkness nearly kills Alina and the group protecting her before Prince Nikolai arrives on his airship. Nikolai quickly becomes Alina’s ally and takes her to a woman named Baghra to show Alina how to reawaken her powers. After intense training with Baghra, Alina reconnects with her abilities and becomes even stronger than before. Alina then decides that it is time to eliminate The Darkling and his allies. At the same time, Nikolai heartedly announces his love for Alina. Sadly for Nikolai, Alina informs him that she does not feel the same. The Darkling, detecting Alina and her allies’ attack, kidnaps Alina and counters the resistance’s strategy by turning Nikolai into one of his shadow servants. Amidst the chaos of Alina’s allies trying to rescue her and the brutal clashes with The Darkling’s forces, Baghra dies. Alina becomes enraged by the events and uses all her remaining strength to unleash her abilities on The Darkling with the intent to kill. Unfortunately, her all-or-nothing attack fails. Alina and her allies that survived the clash make a last-ditch effort to escape the battlefield and successfully escape on Nikolai’s airship.

While Alina and her allies lick their wounds, Mal informs Alina that he may know the Firebird’s location. Alina knows that the Firebird amplification powers are their last hope against The Darkling since Niokali is now a shadow beast. Alina accompanies Mal to a treacherous mountain where they come face to face with the mythical beast. During the battle, Alina discovers that the one she must kill is not the Firebird but instead Mal. With the fate of Ravka and the world at stake, does Alina the heart to kill her closest ally?
