Six of Crows Plot
The novel Six Crows is another book written by the author Leigh Bardugo which takes place in what fans refer to as the Grishaverse. The Grishaverse means a world where people are born capable of manipulating matter of different types at their will. Six of Crow’s storyline takes place two years after Ruin and Rising, the final novel of the Grisha trilogy which Shadow and Bone started.
Ketterdam (reminds you Amsterdam, doesn’t it) is the center of international trade, where everything has a price. It is just a matter of if you know the price. Now, if a tourist wanted to learn how to navigate Ketterdam, there would be no one better to ask than Kaz Brekker, a criminal prodigy. In Ketterdam, the capital of Kerch, Councilman Hoede is carrying out experiments to develop a drug for Grisha called jurda parem. Anya, a Grisha Healer who works for Councilman Hoede, is the first guinea pig the reader meets. Joost, a man who has a crush on Anya, stumbles upon an experiment taking place at a boathouse in a glass room. Joost witnesses
a guard cut open a boy’s arm, and then Anya touches the boy to heal him. Anya then receives an envelope and is then forced to swallow jurda parem. The guard slices the boy’s arm again, but Anya can heal the boy without touching him. Hoede desires to take the experiment further and commands the guard to chop off the boy’s thumb. Anya intervenes by entering the mind her way into the mind of Hoede and making him merchant to chop off his thumb. The enhancement that the Grisha can gain from jurda parem is terrifying.
Later in the novel, a wealthy man named Jan Van Eck approaches Kaz Brekker with a job offer. Jan reveals Hoede’s experimental findings to Kaz and requests his assistance in rescuing the drug’s creator Bo Yul-Bayur. Bo is a prisoner with a never penetrated military stronghold in Fjerda known as Ice Court. Jan seeks to stop the world from learning about the drug. Lucky for Jan, Kaz agrees to a sizeable work fee and assembles a team of notorious and skilled criminals.
He enlists; Inej Ghafa, Nina Zenik, Jesper Fahey, and Wylan Van Eck quickly after accepting the job. Inej Ghafa is an excellent spy who once worked in a brothel. Nina Zenik is a Grisha Heartrender who is eager to join after learning that Kaz intends to free someone she knows. Jesper Fahey, a Zemeni marksman with a gambling problem. Wylan Van Eck is the runaway son of Jan Van Eck, a demolitions expert and insurance for Jan Van Eck to keep his end of the bargain. However, Kaz believes they need one more.
The murder of crows breaks then Matthias Helvar out of Hellgate prison to fill the gap. Nina gave fake testimony declaring Matthias to be working as a slave trader, which resulted in his imprisonment. You only can imagine the dynamic these characters share after the group free Matthias. Kaz stealthily arranges for the team to travel aboard a Fjerda ship called the Ferolind. However, the criminals were in for a surprise of their own. The team was waiting for the boat to arrive at the docks when hidden assailants attack the group. In the altercation in Inej is stabbed. The team subdues the stabber, and Kaz then rips one of the attacker’s eyes out of its socket. A show of force to let the stabber know he means business. Kaz then demands to know who organized the ambush and learns that Pekka Rollins is the mastermind. Pekka Rollins is also behind the death of Kaz’s brother Jordie. Nina also uses her powers to heal Inej’s wound.
Afterward, Wylan draws a map of the entire job site with assistance from Matthias. Kaz breaks down the plan for how the team will extract Bo from the Ice Court while the group travels on the Ferolind. Later, the boat docks at Fjerda, and the group begins the journey to Ice Court. On their journey, the group finds three Grisha each, burned on a stake. This scene serves as an excellent reminder of the Fjredan’s hatred of the Grisha. When the wind reveals that one of the Grisha is alive, Jesper shoots the Grisha to ends its suffering.
