Quotes
"Persons attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find a plot in it will be shot. BY ORDER OF THE AUTHOR" "All right then, I'll go to hell""The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" is a novel by Mark Twain, first published in the United Kingdom in December 1884 and in the United States in February 1885. It is told in the first person by Huckleberry "Huck" Finn, a friend of Tom Sawyer and narrator of two other Twain novels. The book is noted for its colorful description of people and places along the Mississippi River, and its sober and often scathing look at entrenched attitudes, particularly racism. It is one of the Great American Novels, and is widely considered to be one of the greatest novels ever written in the English language. The novel is set in a time before the Civil War, when slavery was still legal and the economic and social life of the South depended on it. Although slavery is a central theme of the novel, it is not a tract for the abolition of slavery, but rather a critique of the attitudes and values that allowed slavery to exist and to be taken for granted by most of the people who benefited from it. The novel has been the subject of controversy ever since its publication, and has been banned or challenged by many schools and libraries over the years."
