The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Intro
Fans of the long-running, beloved sci-fi tv series The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy have another reason to be excited. Morten Tyldum directs another anticipated film for the series set to premiere in 2021. Details about the film, such as the storyline and the cast, are not available currently. However, fans can expect that the film to be released on Hulu. The upcoming movie is an adaptation of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy(1979 in the U.K) by Douglas Adams. Yes, in 1979, the term long-running was not an exaggeration. The series began in 1978 as a radio broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 1978, which followed the adventures of an English space traveler Arthur Dent, after the Earth’s destruction by the Vogons(a wicked alien race). The popularity of the radio broadcast grew, and it later became adapted into various media formats. In 1981, it became a popular tv series starring Simon Jones as Arthur Dent. In 1984, it became a single-player fiction video on various computers of that time, such as Apple II and Commodore 64. Later in 2005, Disney released a well-received movie as an adaptation of the 1979 book, which starred Martin Freeman as Arthur Dent.
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Plot
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy(1979) is the first of six in British writer Douglas Adams’ renowned book series. The book beings with the unassuming hero Arthur Dent lying down in front of a bulldozer. Why is a sane grown man lying in front of a bulldozer, you may ask? Arthur is lying there because his home is about to be demolished. The building is impeding the planned pathway for a road bypass, and it must go. Arthur’s friend Ford Prefect intervenes in the metaphoric game of chicken and successfully persuades Arthur to accompany him to the bar. While also convincing official Mr. Prosser to lie down in front of the bulldozer in Arthur’s place. At the bar, Ford informs Arthur of his true identity. Ford is an alien researcher from Guide, a planet near Betelgeuse( the second-brightest star in the Orion constellation). Ford works for The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, an organization that functions as a galactic storehouse of information. But that was just the beginning. Ford also states that an alien race known as the Vogons is preparing to annihilate Earth to make space for a galactic expressway. Back at Arthur’s home, the demolition begins their work but quickly comes to a halt when the Vogons appear and declare their plans.
Amidst the chaos, Arthur and Ford sneak aboard one of the Vogon ships to safety. On the ship, Ford loans Arthur the electronic guidebook The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and gives him a Babel fish( a device worn on the ear that translates alien speech). However, the duo does not get to rest long. Vogons swiftly detect the stowaways and torture them by subjecting them to their poetry before ejecting them into space. Their poetry is known as among the worse in the entire universe to give context. Luckily for our heroes, Ford’s cousin Zaphod Beeblebrox (Also President of the Galaxy) has stolen the spaceship called Heart of Gold at its unveiling. The Heart of Gold operates on the Infinite Improbability Drive. A component that allows the Heart of Gold to travel to any location immediately.
Zaphon appears quickly after our heroes’ ejection from the Vogon ship accompanied by his human friend Trillian. Zaphon brings them aboard the Heart of Gold, where they find a depressed robot called Marvin(I did not know robots could be depressed either). The crew members of the Heart of Gold then arrive at the legendary planet Magrathea.
Magrathea spent thousands of years frozen in stasis. Before the period of stasis, it was a planet used to design other planetoids, for the universes’ elite. As the Heart of Gold enters Magratha, the planet’s automated planetary defense system activates and fires two nuclear missiles at the ship. The ship is unable to avoid the danger on its propulsion alone. Arthur takes the initiative and switches on the Infinite Improbability Drive. The drive turns the missiles into a bowl of petunias and a sperm whale in the process.
The Heart of Gold eventually safely lands on Magrathea, where Zaphod, Trillian, and Ford begin to search the investigate the planet. Arthur guards the ship with his depressed ally in the meantime. Shortly afterward, Zaphod and co find a tunnel and begin an expedition. The group is abruptly knocked unconscious by gas that floods the tunnel way.
