The Netflix movie scheduled for release during this year is an adaption from the harrowing novel “The Last Letters From our Lover” written by Jojo Moyes. The film stars actors: Felicity Jones, and Joe Alwyn, to mention a few. Its high anticipation draws an audience eager to see the heart-rendering tale of a loveless marriage brought to life.

The Last Letter From Your Lover Plot

Though the novel’s paperback release was in June 2012, its story revolves around tear drawing events that transcend generations. The story begins in 1960 London when Jennifer Stirling wakes from her coma in a hospital bed. Jennifer has no recollection of anything. She has no memories even of the man that is watching over her, who is her husband. Like a newborn baby in an adult’s body, Jennifer has to relearn everything about her life from scratch.

As time goes by, Jennifer manages to deduce that she is married to the wealthy Laurence and comes to believe they share a wonderful home life. After her release from the hospital, Jennifer returns to her lovely rural home. There she searches through her possessions with the aid of her maid, hoping to jog her memories. Amid her search, she discovers a sea of letters addressed to her from B, stealthily stashed around the house. Jennifer instantly remembers the affection her secret lover holds for her that far surpasses that of her cold husband. Jennifer continues to discover more letters until she finds the letter from B, where he pleads with her to leave her husband. As if her past life were a puzzle, she has collected enough pieces to see the lonely image more clearly.

The novel shifts ahead to 2003, where we meet Ellie, a journalist with an unsatisfying career in London. While searching for something to rejuvenate her career, she sifts through archives and stumbles across a letter from B in a file. The passion conveyed from B’s words captivates Ellie. Only the texts she receives from a married man named John have managed to excite her similarly. Ellie slowly becomes obsessed with the letter, unconsciously picturing herself in Jennifer’s place while reading them. Eventually, her obsession boils over, where she decides that she must know what became of Jennifer and the affair with B.

As Ellie investigates, she learns about the lives of women in the 1960s. The heartless expectations that Jennifer had to fulfill without complaint. Ellie empathizes deeply with Jennifer, unlike anyone in Jennifer’s family, even her mother, and begins to be grateful to be in the time she lives in now. At the same time, she realizes the effort needed to communicate with others during the 1960s. It contrasts heavily with how much we take for granted communication now with the ease of technology. Yearning to discover what became of Jennifer and B, Ellie passionately continues her search, deciding to track down Jennifer if she needs to.
