The Odyssey Homer Summary

The Odyssey relates the story of Odysseus’s journey after the Trojan War. The story begins 10 years after the war and Odysseus still has not returned home. He is being detained by a nymph, Calypso on the island Ogygia. Calypso is trying to take Odysseus for herself.

He encounters many foes, trials, and legendary temptations, on his way back to his wife. Including but not limited to the man-eating, a one-eyed Cyclops, the Laestrygonian giants, the beguiling Sirens, the souls of the dead in Hades and the treacherous Scylla and Charybdis. Prevalent themes in the book are love, adventure, pleasures, and food but also mortal danger. All of which entice us to delve even further into the story of Odysseus.
