“I didn’t know exactly when cars were invented, but I figured that was like prehistoric times—back when people watched black-and-white TV and hunted dinosaurs.”

The Titans Curse Plot

The Titan’s Curse is the third installment in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians book series. It features the main characters of the series, Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase, and Grover Underwood, as well as a plethora of new characters, which add more novelty to the series.

The book starts with Percy and his friends attempting to recruit new demigods for Camp Half-Blood. But when things don’t go as well as they were hoping for, they need to form new alliances to keep a threat, strong enough to defy even the gods, from destroying everything they hold dear.

This installment, like others before, strikes an incredible balance between comedy and drama. The Greek mythology elements are engaging, as always, reframing classic myths for today’s culture. The narrative feels recognizable yet original, due to the extended role new characters play in the story.

First of all, there’s Thalia, the daughter of Zeus. She’s amazing and steals the scene many times throughout the book, not only because of her fierce powers but because of her strong personality. After two books hearing stories about the character, we’re not disappointed at all to finally meet her.

She has leadership skills and a defined vision of what she wants and how to achieve it during battle, a trait that clashes directly with Percy’s actions. They are generally at odds about how to get things done, often arguing intensely. But that just makes it even more heartwarming when they get along and protect each other during hard times.

What makes Thalia even more interesting is that behind the strong appearance, there’s a girl unsure of what she wants, full of rage about what happened to her, and haunted by a big prophecy. Her character development throughout the book is phenomenal. We see her tackle all these issues and come to a conclusion that, though not satisfying for some, is a reflection of her choices and needs.

There are other interesting characters in the form of the Hunters of Artemis, a group of fierce female warriors led by the moon goddess. Zoë Nightshade is the highlight among them, a complex character who at many times has a cynic attitude towards the world, but always tries to do the right thing.
The siblings Nico and Bianca also have some exposition, albeit smaller. The mystery of their parenthood is an important one for the series. The ramifications of their narrative set up a cliffhanger capable of creating lasting implications for the next installment.

Regarding the original characters, we have, once again, the further development of the relationship between Percy and Annabeth. This time the romantic undertones are clearer. It is funny and infuriating to watch their inability to express their feelings for each other.

The story keeps a frenetic rhythm right until the end, with many confrontations against monsters, action sequences, and the interference of gods who had no appeared yet in the series. It all culminates in an ending that delivers all the action sequences expected and the emotional moments directly connected to the character development in the narrative.

Overall, The Titan’s Curse is a great sequel to the previous books of the series. It offers fresh characters and dynamics, all the while keeping the things we love about the franchise. It is an emotional and exciting adventure and sets up many story threads for the future, which will make you long for the next book.
