Lara Jean Song, a half-Korean half-white sixteen-year-old girl, is a shy girl who is close to here two sisters, Margot and Kitty. They refer to themselves as the Song Girls. Just before Margot leaves for uni, she breaks up her boyfriend Josh, who happens to be the next door neighbor.
Lara had a crush on Josh and found out before that he also crushed on her. She decided to write a letter fully expressing her feelings which she stores under her bed in a hat-box, where she keeps all her crush letters.
Peter, another one of Lara crushes, approaches her and from what he said she knew he had read her letter. Josh approaches her as he too received a letter. She quickly adverts embarrassment and tells Josh that those feeling are in the past, she is now with Peter and Josh plays along.
As setting some ground rules she spends time together with Peter, some things become clearer. From how he spends time with Kitty and her father, he also invites her to dinner with his mom. Soon enough Petter kisses Lara, and she realizes she wants to date him for real.
The day after a school trip rumors spread about Peter and Jean having sex. Peter does nothing to deny these rumors. Lara humiliated avoided Peter during Christmas semester break.
Kitty admits that she was the one who mailed out her sister’s letters as revenge for almost telling Josh that Kitty had a crush on him. She returns Lara’s hat box now filled with notes Peter wrote to Jean, which Kitty found in the trash. After reading through them, Lara has a change of heart and writes a real love letter to Peter.
