Uglies Summary
Three hundred years in the future, the government has mandated that when a person reaches the age of 16, they must undergo surgery to become “pretty”. The government seeks to have complete control over society, and they are prepared to even surgically design its citizens to achieve this goal. The Uglies focuses on Tally Youngblood, a young teenage girl nearing her 16th birthday. Tally’s best friend Peris, has already undergone the surgery and has been moved into Pretty Town. Tally truly misses Peris and longs to reunite with him. To the extent that she sneaks into Pretty Town just, to see him.
Tally is excited about her upcoming birthday, as she would become eligible to undergo the surgery. This would allow her to join Peris in Pretty Town, which is a town created by the government, for just the pretty members of society. Tally’s friend Shay, however, has no intention of conforming to the government’s agenda and runs away before having to undergo the surgery. Shay leaves a note for Tally to find, informing her about a secret rebel group called Smoke. In the note, Shay tries to encourage Tally, to join the group as well, so that they may both escape together. Tally, however, has made up her mind that she wants to become pretty, and is unable to understand Shay’s motivations.
When Tally’s 16th birthday arrives, she is brought to the Special Circumstances department, where Dr. Cable informs her of bad news. Tally learns that she will not be able to have the surgery unless she agrees to help the government find Shay. Understanding what’s at stake Tally agrees and begins searching for her friend.
Tally was given a tracker for her journey but upon finding the Smokes and understanding what the “Pretty” surgery actually does to the brain; Tally destroys her tracker. Unknowing to her the tracker was designed to activate upon tampering resulting in the Special Division arrival and capture of the Smokes. But our hero Tally manages to escape with another Smoke and the two devise a plan to save the others. Will they be successful? Or did Tally’s mistake doom them all for eternity!
