Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West Introduction

In May 2003, one of broadway’s longest-running musicals raised the curtains of its first performance in San Francisco’s Curran Theatre. This musical would continue to capture the hearts of fans for over a decade. Due to the musical’s popularity, Universal Studios agreed to adapt the musical into a movie, scheduled for a pre-pandemic release for 2021. If you have not guessed already, this musical is known simply as Wicked. Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked(1995): The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West is the basis for both the musical and upcoming movie. Maguire’s novel is a spinoff from L. Frank Baum’s classic novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz(1900) and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s famous classic film The Wizard of Oz(1939). The classic tale of the Wizard of Oz depicts the land of Oz from the perspective of Dorothy Gale. However, Maguire’s Wicked(1995) puts a twist on this tale and portrays its story from the perspective of the infamous Witch of the West. Maguire provides Elphaba Thropp(Wicked Witch of the West) with a feasible backstory and covers all the events that lead her to become well, wicked. Jon M. Chu, director of Crazy Rich Asians, is the new director of the upcoming film Wicked: The untold story of the witches of Oz. Just like its predecessors, the movie has the potential to be a hit. It is just a matter of when the eager fans will have the opportunity to enjoy it

Wicked: The Life And Times Of The Wicked Witch Of The West Plot

The novel begins in Munchkinland, where Melena Thropp and her husband Frexspar Thropp have just welcomed their new daughter into the world. Frexspar is a unionist minister and pastor who does his best to take care of the family. Melena believes she has married down her social standing since she is the granddaughter of the current Eminent Thropp of Munchkinland. The Eminent Thropp is the highest regarded title or position of prominence in Munchkinland held solely by the head of the Thropp Family. Only the matriarchs in the Thropp family can be the Eminent Thropp. The only exception is when there is no living daughter to take on the position, and a son must be selected. The Thropp family live in their coveted manor called the Colwen Grounds. Melena married the commoner Frexspar to escape the drama of Colwen Grounds. However, she later comes to regret her decision and comforts herself by meeting with various men. It would be easy to guess that Elphaba is not Frexspar’s daughter but not for the reasons you think. One day a mysterious drifter approached Melena and gave her a potion called Miracle Elixir in a green bottle to drink. The elixir was a drug that disoriented Melena and allowed the drifter to impregnate her against her will.

Frexspar quickly comes to see his new daughter as a punishment from god. Elphaba is born with green skin, pointed teeth, and a savage dog-like behavior where she bites everything and everyone, even herself. Frexspar and Melena force Elphaba to wear a muzzle for safety. Elphaba is also a pain to shower as the touch of water causes her immense pain. Melena hires a babysitter to help raise Elphaba. Frexspar sees the presence of the babysitter as an excuse to spend less time at home. Frexspar takes the opportunity to spend hours away from his house preaching to whoever will listen. Melena takes up new vices to avoid thinking about the problems in her life. Melena chews pinlobble leaves and becomes an alcoholic while also having a hot affair with Turtle Heart. Turtle Heart is a wanderer that visited Melena’s home unexpectedly. Melena offered him great hospitality, and with Frexspar often absent from the house. They began to know each other intimately.

Elphaba grows up in a chaotic home environment. Along with this, Elphaba’s green skin alienates her from her family and the average citizen. As if things were not challenging enough already, a foreign Wizard also arrives and conquers Oz. He shows himself to be a wicked tyrant who suppresses any entity he doesn’t see as worthy.
